The Princess & The Pea

Currently I am working on a series of new illustrations for little children. I guess “think pink” describes pretty much the direction I am taking with this project. This illustration is the first¬† of whimsical little paintings in pastell colors showing princesses, ballerinas, teddy bears and such…whatever a little child might like.

The illustration is done in mixed media. I began with a colored pencil drawing and continued with acrylics and oil washes. The details were added in colored pencils.

Mobile Bay – Where Did The Oil Go?

It’s finished!

While I was painting a subtitle idea for this illustration came to me: “Where Did The Oil Go?” I thought of the oil spill that happened not too long ago and just wanted it to be part of the painting.¬† Because of it, I had to make some ‘minor’ adjustments such as the black water and the oil dripping from the pelican skeletons. I used a lot of ink besides acrylics and colored pencils on this illustration to give it a dark chalkboard appearance.

The illustration is based on an ink drawing on illustration board (below). I layered acrylic washes and added details with colored pencils and ink.

Henry J. King Steamboat

The drawing is layered on top of a map showing Mobile, Alabama. The map was prepped with a thin layer of white gesso to ensure the drawing will be visible on top of the original colors.

The image is an old steamboat loaded with cotton rolls. The text below is taken from an old newspaper article about the “Henry J. King” steamboat. Mr. King was my clients Great,Great Grandfather.
